TransUnion Enhances Solutions for the Insurance Industry With Majority Ownership of Drivers History

TransUnion announced today the acquisition of a majority interest in Drivers History, a leading provider of traffic violations and criminal court data. This transaction enhances TransUnion's position as a trusted provider of data and analytic solutions to the insurance industry and strengthens Drivers History's offering and market access by leveraging TransUnion's carrier relationships and connectivity. Although it will retain its operational independence, Drivers History will be expanding its relationship with TransUnion's Insurance business unit for the immediate benefit of both organizations. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Service offers insurers insight into driving records at a fraction of the cost of an MVR

Chicago, March 24, 2014 – TransUnion and Drivers History, a market leader in acquiring, processing/aggregating and distributing traffic and criminal related court data, announced today a new revolutionary service for the insurance industry – TransUnion DriverRiskSM powered by Drivers History.

The service permits auto insurance carriers to supplement their existing processes and identify those drivers with ratable activity, optimizing the use of motor vehicle reports (“MVRs”) while managing expenses. This collaboration also creates a powerful predictor of loss that insurers may integrate into their existing underwriting/rating models. 

The timing of DriverRisk comes as the cost for MVRs, the single largest expense for auto insurance carriers, continues to rise as states increase MVR fees as a source of revenue.

Are States Shooting Themselves in the Foot as Insurers Turn to Courts to Avoid High DMV Fees?

As states desperately search for much needed revenue by raising the fees for motor vehicle records (MVR), insurers have just as desperately sought ways to reduce their rising MVR costs, which now exceed $1 billion annually. The first tool were models that looked at other data sets for indicators on which records might prove useful and which would not. These have yielded significant savings for carriers in recent years, but they have the drawback of reducing information in the underwriting process, not adding it. The newest solution to high-cost MVRs is coming from the very source of MVR information: court records. Court records are the original data set that drives the MVR, so they’re more complete and more timely than MVRs. And because so many constituencies use court records, the chances are remote that prices will spike.
